Peter Wright

Born in Launceston Peter grew up down the West Tamar at Sidmouth, on the family property “Glendale” which was part of the families orchard. Peter has painted all of his life. His Uncle and Aunt were Geoff and Hilma Tyson and during his childhood their works surrounded him, both artists made a lasting impression on him.

Peter watched Geoff paint and Hilma with her screen printing, painting ad ceramics.  Hilma was to become very inspirational and in the last five years of her life, critiqued his work and helped him to improve. After moving to Melbourne at the age of 27, Peter attended the Melbourne School of Art and studied watercolour.

Several years later he moved to Daylesford where he had my first solo exhibition. For the next ten years, he exhibited in various art shows around country Victoria.

Returning to Tasmania eight years ago, he attended the Launceston Art Society Retrospective at Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.  After talking with fellow artist Carlton Cox, whom he had known for years through Hilma, he suggested that Peter go along to Rosemary Hills Painting Group.

She at that time had a painting in the art show so he went to look at her style and to no surprise he liked it, his Uncle Geoff had taught her after all.

Peter has been in Rosemary’s Art Group for several years now. “With her direction and teaching my work has improved immensely.  It’s good to set that time aside every week, or else you don’t do it” Peter says. Peter finds it invigorating and inspirational to paint in the group with twelve others. “Our painting styles are all different, but that’s good! We bounce off each other and they are a wonderful group” Peter states.

2019 Peter’s exhibition and Blenheim Gallery features landscapes, seascapes, architectural and still life watercolours. Along with handmade bush stick furniture which is what he is known for.
