Congratulations Penny Mason - PLC Sydney - Adelaide Perry Gallery Drawing Prize 2025 Finalist

Congratulations to Penny Mason with her dazzling work “Granite, Quartz, Seawater”, which absolutely sings as a finalist exhibition at PLC Sydney - Adelaide Perry Gallery Drawing Prize 2025.

The Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, valued at $25,000.00, is an acquisitive prize.  Finalists in the competition are also eligible to be considered for The People’s Choice Award, valued at $2,000.00 (non-acquisitive). To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the event, a second acquisitive prize, the PLC Sydney Prize for Arts Education, valued at a minimum of $5,000, will be awarded in

Granite, Quartz, Seawater

Penny says her drawings respond to the natural environment. Motifs may include bodies of water, shell, bone and plant fragments, worm casts, horizon lines, fossilised material and pebbles. The dispersed compositions of wheeling spaces and drifting matter recall dynamic particles in a kinetic field of continuous transformation.

Pooled watercolours can be particularly sensitive to capturing rhythms and energy, creating a flow between representation and abstraction. This process of sedimentation appears to mimic events that shape landforms and surface textures. The forms that emerge can be read as landscapes viewed from above, yet skewed to create layered fields of space, voids and details.
